Ever promise yourself you are not going to get stressed, or upset, or worried, or angry about particular situations and before you know it there you are – right where you don’t want to be? Ever give yourself a hard time about that? Ever feel like you are not really living life on your own terms, and time is slipping by? Ever just want to press the pause button, and start afresh? Or do you sometimes sense there is more joy and connection in the world than you can currently access?
Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to, and seeing clearly, whatever is happening in our lives. We become more and more aware of what we are thinking, our mood, and how we feel in our body. This awareness of what is actually going on within us, and around us, in any particular moment, creates a space to recognise and consider our automatic reactions. Mindfulness offers us a chance to respond to everyday events in a more creative and skillful way.
Mindfulness will not eliminate life’s pressures or surprises, but practice will help us to find some inner space and clarity and approach life more and more in the manner we decide we want.
